Love The Mess

Life is messy, right?  At least, it can be at times.  I know in my own life, I’ve either been in the mess or created the mess!  But I’ve grown to “love the mess”. The mess is where people need you most.  And when you feel loved the most is when you’re in the mess!

I see, throughout Scripture, that Jesus was in the midst of mess.  He was born in a “barn”. Those are messy places. On one occasion, in Matthew 8:23-27, He slept right in the middle of a storm.  Can you imagine the mess in that boat? Waves pounding into it; cargo, crates, nets sloshing all over the place.  What a mess! But Jesus was right in the middle of it and He calmly brought peace. In Matthew 27:28-31, we read: “They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him, and when they wove a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a staff in His right hand. They knelt before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spit on Him, and took the staff and hit Him on the head. After they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.”  This was a bloody, messy scene.  And this is what our Savior endured – despising the shame (Hebrews 12).  The soldiers that day, at the foot of the cross, were a mess.  Their hearts were a mess. And without asking for it, Jesus gave them forgiveness. Wow!

When Jesus died on that cross, He took care of our mess and provided a way for us to have peace.  And that peace, in our mess, is why I’ve grown to “love the mess.” It’s the peace that passes all understanding - Philippians 4:7“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

And I have good news for you today! If your life is a little messy, or maybe even a lot messy, Jesus wants to help you clean up the mess and find peace.  It’s not the first time, nor the last time, that Jesus has seen a mess. So just let Him in. Jesus loved the mess and he loves you.
